CORONAVIRUS INFORMATION

Travel insurance and coronavirus

Saga Travel Insurance is pleased to be able to offer cover for cancellation or abandonment if you, or anyone you are planning to travel or stay with receives, in writing, a positive test result for coronavirus within 14 days of your trip commencing. Or if you're certified as too ill to travel due to you still suffering from COVID-19, by a medical practitioner.

This is in addition to emergency medical cover should you fall ill with coronavirus while on holiday.

We’ll also cover repatriation to get you home, if deemed medically necessary.

If you’ve already purchased a Saga Travel Insurance policy and would like to check what cover you have in place regarding coronavirus, please check your Policy Book.

It’s important to note that Saga Travel Insurance is not able to cover any other claims that relate to coronavirus. Please see the Policy Book for full terms and conditions.

Included with Saga Travel Insurance:

  • From up to £2,500 to £20,000 cover for cancellation
  • From up to £2 million to £20 million cover for emergency medical expenses
  • 24-hour medical support helpline
  • Cover for most pre-existing medical conditions
  • 24/7 unlimited use of the Saga GP Service.

What is deemed as an essential reason for travel?

  • To accompany a person from the UK to go abroad, to a medical appointment, where you are a member of their household, or a close relative, as defined under the policy.
  • To visit someone who is dying, critically ill, or receiving treatment in a hospice.
  • To travel for a funeral, not for commemorative events or visiting burial grounds.
Coronavirus FAQs
Is it possible to buy a new travel insurance policy?

Yes, you can buy a new single trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance policy from Saga.

You'll be covered for the following:

  • Emergency medical costs if you become ill with coronavirus while you’re away
  • Cancellation if you test positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of your trip’s departure date or if you are certified as too ill to travel by a medical practitioner, due to you still suffering from COVID-19.

But you will not be covered for any other travel disruption in relation to coronavirus.

What happens if I travel against FCDO advice?

If you travel to a country where the FCDO has advised against all but essential travel, for a non-essential reason, you’ll have no cover in place for any policy section if the reason for your claim is related to why the FCDO advice is in place, for example COVID-19. Subject to there being no other government restrictions in place prohibiting travel.

If you travel for essential reasons, see this list of what is deemed essential, then you will have full policy coverage in place.

However, if you travel to a country where the FCDO advise against all travel then we are not able to provide any cover.

Visit the Government website to see the most up-to-date travel advice.

What if I contract coronavirus while overseas?

Saga Travel Insurance policyholders should call our emergency medical helpline as soon as possible. The phone line is open 24/7 and an English-speaking advisor will be able to help you find the most appropriate place to seek medical attention.

Within the EU, your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will entitle you to treatment on the same terms as a local. Elsewhere, your travel insurance will cover the cost of emergency medical treatment.

Will I be covered if my trip is within the UK?

For trips within the UK, for which you have taken out a Saga Travel Insurance policy, there is cover for cancellation and abandonment as well as emergency medical and associated costs not covered by the NHS. Please see the Policy Books for full details.

Please note, cover under the medical expenses benefit has been extended to up to £2 million for trips that take place within the UK.
