Choosing car insurance for over 70s

There’s no maximum legal age for driving in the UK. So, you’re free to continue driving as long as you’re fit enough.

The number of people over 70 driving in the UK has rapidly increased recently. According to Government statistics, in 2022, 73% of adults aged 70 and over in England held a driving licence, up from 59% in 2012.

As a mature driver, you have different needs to the younger generation, so you’ll want to choose the best over-70s car insurance to suit you.

Can over 70s car insurance be cheaper?

As an over 70, you may have retired, which means your financial situation may have changed. Finding cheaper car insurance can be helpful, especially if you’re living off your pension.

There are ways to keep costs down and find the cheapest car insurance for over 70s, including:

  • Driving a car from a lower insurance group.
  • Review your voluntary excess.
  • Ensuring your vehicle is secure.

You might have many years of no-claim discount and experience behind the wheel, which can also help keep costs down. Having a low claims history can also reduce the price of your insurance.

Our 3-year fixed price feature for over 70s car insurance can help you budget. If there are no legal changes, like changing your car, moving house, or getting points on your licence, the price of Saga Plus insurance stays the same for 2 renewals (T&Cs apply). Your price can even remain the same after most claims.

Car Insurance for over 70s FAQs

Do I need to renew my driving licence when I reach 70?

You need to renew your licence every three years after you turn 70. About 90 days before your 70th birthday, the DVLA will send you a letter asking you to renew your driving licence. You don’t need to retake your test. Just send back the form on paper or online.

When you renew your licence, you confirm that you have no medical conditions and that your eyesight meets the minimum requirements for driving. It’s essential that you report any medical conditions that can impact your ability to drive to the DVLA.

Always use GOV.UK to renew your driving licence online. Unofficial websites may overcharge.

Do I meet the eyesight requirements for driving over 70?

It’s illegal to drive if you can’t read a number plate from 20 metres away. If you can do so in glasses, you must wear them to drive. Not wearing your glasses or wearing glasses with the wrong prescription could invalidate your car insurance.

Take advantage of your free NHS eye test to check you have the right prescription.

Do I need to declare medical conditions to the DVLA?

You must tell the DVLA about medical conditions that could affect your driving. You don’t need to tell them about all conditions, just those on the GOV.UK list of health conditions that may affect your driving.

Having one of the conditions on the list doesn’t automatically stop you from driving. You might need to take a driving assessment to check you’re safe to drive.

Failing to declare medical conditions to the DVLA could invalidate your insurance policy. If you have an accident because of your condition, you could face a fine of up to £1,000 or imprisonment.

Should I tell Saga about medical conditions?

Unless the DVLA restricts your driving or removes your licence, there’s no need to tell us about any medical conditions. You can continue to enjoy driving, protected by our car insurance for over 70s.

Should I take a driving assessment?

It’s probably been a while since you passed your driving test. If you’re concerned about your safety on the road or want to take a refresher, you could arrange a driving assessment course.

Organisations, including RoSPA and the IAM, provide driver assessments. In these assessments, you drive your own car for an hour around an area you know. Afterwards, you get a report and advice on how you can improve your skills and drive more safely.

Driver assessments aren’t tests. They check your driving and can help you make changes to be safer on the roads.

If you lose confidence in your driving after an accident or for any reason, we can help you arrange up to 4 hours of driver confidence coaching with an instructor of your choice. Driver confidence courses are available to customers with legal protection, which is included as standard in Saga Plus cover or optional with other types of Saga cover.
