TAILOR YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE

You can tailor your policy with our additional cover options, so you have the cover that's right for you.

Options to improve your cover

You can tailor and improve your Saga Health Insurance policy so you can have the cover that's right for you, with one or more of the following options:

Extended Cancer Cover

All Saga HealthPlans offer cover for the surgical treatment of cancer, and all, except for Support cover radiotherapy and chemotherapy too. However, for greater reassurance Extended Cancer Cover can be added to all health plans except Support.

With this cover, you have access to drugs for the treatment of cancer where the drug has been licensed for use and is being used within the terms of that licence. This includes medical treatment to help prevent the recurrence of cancer or maintain remission.

Health Cash Benefits Cover

It's important to us that we continue to provide our customers with a wide range of benefits. That's why we introduced our optional Health Cash Benefits Cover.

This cover option provides cashback towards your everyday healthcare costs, such as dental and optical appointments or treatment.

With Health Cash Benefits Cover you can claim for all these elements:

  • Dental Care: up to £200 per person, per policy year
  • Health Assessment: up to £150 per person, per policy year
  • Dental Accident: up to £200 per person, per policy year
  • Dental Emergency: up to £200 per person, per policy year
  • Optical Care: up to £150 per person, per policy year

One of the great things about this cover option is that you can claim these benefits without paying an excess and these claims won't affect your No Claim Discount.

So, if you'd like to make trips to the dentist a little less painful, call us on 0330 094 6361 to add this cover to your policy.

Cover for pre-existing hypertension

Hypertension, or persistently raised blood pressure, can lead to serious medical problems such as a stroke or heart attack. Many insurers don't offer health insurance for hypertension or associated conditions if you already have hypertension when you join.

However, because our medical insurance is designed for the over 50s, for an additional cost, we can provide you with full cover if you currently have this condition – subject to two simple qualifying questions.

Protecting your No Claim Discount

When you take out a Saga HealthPlan you'll usually start with a 35% No Claim Discount and this rises annually by 5% to a maximum of 60% if no claims are made. If you make a claim you just move back two levels on the scale, but you'll never fall below level 0, no matter how many claims you make.

Available for an additional payment, Saga's No Claim Discount protection allows you to make one claim during the previous policy year without it reducing your No Claim Discount.

Options to reduce your premium

You can reduce the amount you pay for your health insurance premium by choosing from one or more of the following options:

4-week wait

Choosing this option can reduce your premium significantly, making your health insurance even more affordable.

Saga is unique in offering a 4-week wait. Whilst some other insurers offer a similar option, this is on a 6-week wait basis, so it's more likely you'll be treated privately via Saga.

How it works...

Choose the 4-week wait option and you’ll be seen on the NHS if the in-patient or day-patient treatment you need is available within four weeks.

Out-patient consultations and diagnostic tests will still be available privately, up to the benefit limits of your chosen plan.

You can also claim £100 cash benefit for every night spent receiving eligible treatment in an NHS hospital, up to £2,000 per policy year (£150 per night, up to £3,000 per year for Saga HealthPlan Super).

If the NHS can’t see you within four weeks, you’ll get prompt access to private treatment.

There are also eight common conditions for which we'll provide immediate treatment, even if you choose the 4-week wait option. These are:

  • Varicose veins surgery
  • Removal of gall bladder
  • Haemorrhoidectomy
  • Removal of bunions
  • Correction of squint
  • Insertion of grommets
  • Tonsillectomy
  • Adenoidectomy.

  • We also offer a 6-week wait option which works in a similar way, except you'll be seen by the NHS if the treatment is available within six weeks. Unfortunately, this option is not available online so please call 0330 094 6361 for more information.

Excess options

As with other insurance, you can add an excess to your Saga Health Insurance policy to reduce your premium.

The excess is the amount you agree to pay each year before any benefit becomes payable. Saga HealthPlans offer a choice of £0, £100, £250, £500, £750 or £1,000 optional excesses. Your chosen excess is payable once per person per policy year, regardless of the number of claims made.

Guided Care

The Guided Care option is convenient and you'll normally be seen quicker than customers who obtain a named referral from their GP.

Here's how it works:

  • Step 1: If a GP wants you to see a specialist, ask for an open referral (which states the type of specialist you need to see rather than naming a particular specialist). Find out more about referrals with Bupa
  • Step 2: When you require treatment, we will support you by providing a choice of specialists to treat you
  • Step 3: You can book your appointment with a specialist at a time and place that suits you. We can offer support when you book the appointment.
