PERSONAL BELONGINGS INSURANCE

Protect your personal possessions when you take them out and about

Protect your valuables when you’re outside the home with personal possessions insurance

Smartphones. Laptops. Watches. Our most valuable possessions are often the ones we carry around with us. That’s why we offer personal belongings insurance, to protect your valuables in case they’re lost, stolen or damaged when you’re away from home.

What is personal possessions insurance?

Personal belongings insurance protects your valuables against theft, loss and damage when you take them out of your home. We know that these incidents can happen at any time, which is why our cover protects your possessions anywhere in the world.

Personal possessions cover is included as standard with Saga Plus home insurance, and can be added to your Saga Select policy at any time by calling 0800 056 9102 or chat with us now.

You can choose to add cover up to £2,500, £5,000 or £10,000 per incident, with a single item limit of £2,500. Whether you leave your iPad on the train, smash your mobile phone in town or have your camera stolen on holiday, you can claim on your personal belongings cover.

What’s covered by personal belongings insurance?

Our personal possessions insurance covers the loss of or damage to your personal belongings when you’re away from home, as well as items that you’ve hired and are legally responsible for.

These valuables might include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Mobile phones
  • Laptops
  • Tablets
  • Wallets, purses and handbags
  • Musical instruments

We also cover bicycles, but they are covered slightly differently. Read more about our bicycle cover.

What’s not covered by personal belongings insurance?

There are certain circumstances that aren’t covered by our personal possessions insurance policy. These include:

  • Wear and tear
  • Washing, dyeing, restoring or misuse
  • Mechanical or electrical breakdowns or failure
  • Contact lenses
  • Personal belongings in the possession of a family member living away from home in student accommodation

This isn't an exhaustive list. You should always check the Policy Book for full details of exclusions.

Are your possessions covered away from home?

Yes, personal belongings insurance is specifically there to protect items when you take them with you away from home. Whether you’re off to work, going for coffee with your friends or jetting off on holiday, our cover protects your possessions wherever you are in the world.

Are your possessions covered anywhere abroad?

Heading off on holiday? Don’t forget your travel insurance. But rest assured that our personal possessions insurance covers most of your valuables anywhere in the world.

The only exception is for bicycles – these are covered in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and up to 60 days in Europe. So if you’re heading abroad with your bike, make sure you check your policy and get extra cover as part of your travel insurance if need be.

Can you be over-insured?

Yes you can. If you're over-insured, you might be paying too much for your policy. Or you might be doubling up on personal item insurance if you already have cover for certain valuables through other insurance policies.

You can also be under-insured. If that’s the case, when you make a claim, you may not get enough money back to cover the cost of the loss, damage or theft.

That’s why it’s important to correctly estimate the value of your personal possessions when you buy home insurance.

Who are Saga's home insurance policies underwritten by?
